Church of SS. Trinità at Momo

(Momo, NO) This lovely little country church, probably erected in the 11th century, and lavishly decorated in the late Middle Ages, is really worth a visit!

Originally built as a simple “resting chapel” (cappella de susta) for pilgrims, it was later on slightly enlarged and beautifully painted with colourful frescoes that are almost perfectly preserved! The painters who made them owned one of the most renowned workshops in Novara, the Cagnola’s.
On the walls you’ll enjoy dozens of episodes from both canonical and apocryphal Gospels, such as the Annunciation, the Last Supper, the Final Judgment, Jesus’ childhood, etc. Being mostly thought and created for simple, illiterate pilgrims, this gorgeous array of vivid frescoes has a fluid, easily understandable language, far from any sort of intellectualization.
For all those who love the romantic little country churches!

(duration of the visit: ca. 75 min. - Distance from lake Orta: 25 Km/ Combinable with the basilica of S. Michele at Oleggio, 7 km)
