Oleggio and the ancient Basilica of San Michele (11th century)
This well-known church, around half an hour by car from Lakes Orta and Maggiore, stands isolated outside the town of Oleggio (13000 inhab.).
It is dedicated to the archangel Michael and, from an artistic and historical point of view, is one of the most important churches in the region.
Both its romanesque architecture and inner paintings have a long and intricate history; many frescoes have survived and can still be admired on several walls.
Under the high altar and the sanctuary the ancient little crypt is worth a visit.
