Palazzo Penotti Ubertini, Orta San Giulio

At the beginning of the eighteenth century Paolo Gemelli had this beautiful palazzo built on the left side of the scenic “Salita della Motta”, in Orta San Giulio. It has the distinction of never having been sold but rather passed into the hands of four different families exclusively by inheritance.

During the nineteenth century it was the home of the local notary Marco Antonio Penotti, whose study room is still well preserved with a rich archive of documents. His son married one of the most beautiful girls in the village, Maria Ubertini, who unfortunately became a widow not yet in her twenties: in the following years she was able to carefully manage this beautiful abode.
The history of the building and its particular owners over the course of three hundred years is truly fascinating and today it is possible to visit with a licensed Guide a dozen of well-preserved rooms, including the elegant and bright Salone Rosa (Rose Hall) where distinguished guests were received on the most diverse occasions, enlivened by the sound of the Viennese piano still on display. Palazzo Penotti Ubertini is the only private house that can be visited today in Orta San Giulio. It is located a few steps from the scenic central square of the village, Piazza Motta. A gem not to be missed!
