Ameno

(10 min. by car from Orta)

With less than one thousand inhabitants the town of Ameno is characterized by buildings and churches mostly dating back to the 16th and 17th century.

However it was founded in far more ancient times. At the beginning of the 20th century, archaeologists unearthed a huge burial ground containing Celtic and Roman tombs.

In the town centre you’ll find typical cafes where you can while away a pleasant half hour as well as a bizarre public garden with a huge freestanding painted wall (19th cent.) inspired by English gothic architecture.

Ameno boasts churches brimming with beautiful works of art; you can also find a good book to read in the little but rich Library Giulio Macchi, recently opened to the public, or simply wandering around enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of the place, or even paying a visit to one of the local art studios.

You’ll have the chance to buy an excellent, high quality honey (wildflower, chestnut, acacia and honeydew) from a local producer!
