Lake Orta & the Novara region
This region has changed little over time, the landscape still dominated by the shining green rice-fields in the south and the gentle wooded hills in the north.
And yet a half hour drive from Novara brings you to Milan, a vibrant, bustling, industrialised city.
It is a region of surprises and contrasts but ultimately it is the overwhelming sense of heritage that predominates.
Take for example Lake Orta, one of the most charming places in Northern Italy. Here you will come across seemingly untouched little towns and villages with cobblestone lanes, old shops, farms with colourful orchards and vegetable gardens, like in an old painting. For us third millennium tourists, such a reality has become strikingly precious and sought after. Meandering along the old lanes in Orta San Giulio it is easy to be transported back through the ages and to get a real sense of walking in history.
Even larger towns such as Novara, Arona or Borgomanero have maintained their old, enchanting "hearts" where the modern visitor can connect directly with the historical "soul" of the place.
Moreover, you can admire here and there artistic gems, both great and small, many almost unknown by mass-tourism, such as the imposing dome by architect Antonelli, towering over the city of Novara (and visible at a great distance!), the medieval basilica of S. Giulio on Lake Orta, with its enchanting frescoes and famous stone pulpit, the colossal statue of Saint Charles Borromeo in Arona, more than 30 metres high (90 feet ca.), the little churches full of exquisite late-medieval frescoes depicting a series of patron saints tasked with protecting people from plague, disease and natural catastrophes.
On Lake Orta you can also visit the famous Sacro Monte di San Francesco d’Assisi, a baroque architectural complex designated as a UNESCO site in 2003.
In terms of gastronomy, the territory of Novara boasts first rate wines (you can pay a visit to one of the numerous vineries around), many different types of rice, cheese and exquisite honeys (acacia, chestnut, wildflower).
This area of Italy is spectacularly beautiful with a legacy of precious man-made art set in a landscape which has clearly inspired generation after generation of architects and artists. There's only one way to taste all these delicacies and to enjoy the dazzling works of art of this land: come and visit it!!
